OK Michael Jackson is dead. We all know that by now. I grew up thrilled by Thriller. I had the album(you all do know what an album is right?). I listened to it endlessly, I moon walked, and I knew every word to every song. As I got older MJ got stranger. He became a white guy, he spent his money trying to build his own version of Disneyland and of course the trial for the alleged molestation of a 12 year old boy. Oh yeah let us not forget the baby dangling off a hotel balcony incident. This is someone who was bound to have a tragic end to his sad life. Now, here is where I am really frustrated with our whole country.
We have people in Iran protesting a rigged election and being killed by their own government. We have soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan dying to insure we all stay safe. We have over 10% unemployment in parts of our own country. We have a president and congress working every day to strip away our freedoms and liberties. We are in a world of hurt here people!! Yet the only thing I hear about 24/7 is the death of a pop star. How pathetic. I was listening to the radio and I heard a woman quoted as saying
"Michael Jackson was so great. He was like Obama. I cannot believe he is dead."
Are you kidding me????? We have a problem with priorities in the country when this man's death gets more air time than any of the things I mentioned above. What has happened to us? Are we still the greatest country in the world? I am starting to question this notion. These people we seem to worship are not role models. They are not to be revered or honored. They are sad and tragic figures that do not deserve the coverage or attention we give them in life or death. It is time that we get real about what matters and what we are teaching our children by endlessly pondering the death of a man like MJ.
